An oil on canvas signed lower right by Émile Schmidt-Wehrlin. Records at the Musée des peintres du Faouët in Brittany place his birth in Glarus, Switzerland, in 1850, and his working years are generally given as 1900 to 1925. His known works include views of Antibes, Moscow, and Breton villages. Here, beneath a stone archway draped in ivy, a hunter in a brown coat holds up a hare for a young woman in an Edwardian blouse and dark skirt, while two spaniels circle at their feet. Beyond the arch, a sunlit garden path opens toward a distant château. The light spilling through the archway gives the scene real warmth. It is presented in a gilt frame and suits a library, a study, or a hallway.
