A hand-colored French engraving from 1814, titled Cérémonie du 4 Avril 1814 sur la Place Louis XV. It records a ceremony held in the great square now known as the Place de la Concorde, days after the Allied armies entered Paris and as Napoleon’s empire came to an end. The view looks across the square toward the Tuileries Palace and its domed pavilion, with a flag flying above. In the foreground, the famous rearing Marly horses stand on their pedestals at the entrance to the Champs-Élysées. Mounted cavalry in blue coats and red saddlecloths fill the front ranks, rows of infantry stand behind them, and an altar rises on a stepped platform at the center of the square. The print was engraved by Dubois and published in Paris on the rue Saint-Jacques, the historic heart of the city’s print trade. It is presented in an antique gilt frame with trailing flowers and leaves, with a modern mat. It suits a library, a study, or a hallway.
