A 19th-century French mantel in white Carrara marble with the original gilt bronze details.

The bronze across the front is the part that gets you — acanthus scrolls and laurel tied off with a ribbon, with little bows tucked into the top corners. Run your eye down the legs and there are flaming torches over more scrollwork and rosettes. Warm gold against cool, soft white stone.

Those bows aren't just decoration. The ribbon knot — the noeud de ruban — is one of the most beloved motifs in French decorative arts, and it really took off in the Louis XVI period. The idea was to make heavy materials like bronze and marble look light, as if a length of silk ribbon had been tied around a laurel swag or a torch and left to flutter. You see it everywhere in that era: crowning a swag of flowers, gathering a wreath, topping a clock. It carried a romantic, slightly sentimental charge too, ribbons tying things together, love knots, that sort of language. By the 19th century it had become shorthand for French elegance itself, which is exactly why it shows up here on the corners.

Because so many of our pieces have already survived a century or two, we want them to reach you in one piece for the next century. We work with a trusted delivery team that handles in-home delivery

Because of the nature of vintage, antiques, and furniture, all sales are final and sold "As-is". Antiques come with the small marks and signs of age that come from being loved and used long before they reached us. We photograph and describe condition as honestly as we can, but we always want you to feel sure before you buy.

Please go over the measurements carefully and picture the piece in your actual space. If you have a question, ask it before you check out. If you want another angle, a close-up of a particular detail, or more on the condition, just email us. We would always rather send ten more photos than have a piece arrive and not be what you pictured.

What shipping costs comes down to the piece itself, its weight and size, along with where it's headed. To make things easier, we include a shipping estimate with every piece so there are no surprises at checkout. Just find the group above that your state falls into, and you'll see the quote that applies to you. After checkout is complete, you will be contacted by our shipping team.

Please note, shipping can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks.
