A four-drawer Louis XVI commode in oak, stripped and bleached until the wood took on a soft driftwood tone. The carving is the whole story here: laurel vines trailing across each drawer front, wreathed medallions set around the escutcheons, carved lozenges anchoring the ends, and a fine lamb's tongue border framing every panel. Fluted quarter columns fall down the canted corners to tapered feet, and the apron carries a gadrooned edge with a single daisy at center.

The gilt bronze pulls and escutcheons is exactly what you want against wood this pale.

Generous in scale but never heavy. Beautiful in an entry, better still in a bedroom, where the bleached oak sits easily with linen and the carving rewards a second look.

  • Condition: Good antique condition, with the honest patina and surface wear you would expect of a piece this age. The top is built from separate oak planks, the joins visible as part of the original construction. Drawer interiors retain their original oxidized oak, several shades darker than the bleached exterior, with historic worm flight, shrinkage cracks. Structurally sound throughout.
