A mortar carved by hand from a single block of wood in the 18th century, with a deep, rounded well and a sturdy handle projecting from one side. The outside is faceted with the cuts of the carver’s tools, and centuries of handling have worn the wood to a dark, almost black patina, with warmer brown showing through where hands gripped it most. The turned pestle is incised with rings and topped with a rounded knob, and it has mellowed to a lighter honey tone. Pieces like this were used in kitchens to grind salt, herbs, and spices. It has a strong sculptural presence on a kitchen counter, an open shelf, or a stack of books.
