A wide French earthenware bowl, glazed inside in soft mustard yellow, with the outside mottled in rich amber and tortoiseshell brown where the glaze ran and darkened in the kiln. Two loop handles rise from the rim, which is turned with a set of stepped rings. Bowls like this were everyday pieces in French farmhouse kitchens, used for mixing and serving, or for setting milk so the cream could rise. Years of use have left a fine web of crazing and utensil marks across the interior that give it real character. It is lovely on a dining table with fruit, on a kitchen island, or on a console holding keys and small things.
