A bust of the Madonna carved in marble and signed A. Carli, in the tradition of the Italian sculpture workshops of the early 20th century. Her face is carved in pale, luminous marble, eyes lowered and serene beneath a softly ridged veil. The mantle is cut from grey marble veined in charcoal, opening over a bodice of warm, blush-toned stone, and the bust rests on a canted white marble base. The contrast between the smooth face and the richly veined drapery gives the piece real depth. It is beautiful on a mantel, a stack of books, or a bedside table.
