delfts-blue-and-white-ginger-jar
Delfts Blue and White Ginger Jar

A large lidded ginger jar by Petrus Regout’s Royal Sphinx pottery in Maastricht, in its celebrated Delfts pattern. The fluted, baluster body is decorated in deep cobalt with shaped reserves of chrysanthemums and peonies, framed by scrolling foliage, lattice panels, and bold stylized blooms. The domed lid repeats the floral reserves against a fine lattice ground above a scalloped rim, and it is crowned with a seated foo dog finial. Founded in 1834, Regout’s Maastricht works became one of the great Dutch potteries, and its Delfts pattern carried the spirit of traditional Delft blue onto finely printed earthenware. It is lovely on a mantel, a console, or a sideboard, and it pairs beautifully with other blue and white.

Maker: Petrus Regout, Royal Sphinx, Maastricht

Pattern: Delfts

Origin: The Netherlands

Age: Mid-20th century

Material: Transfer-printed earthenware

Details: Fluted baluster body, floral reserves within scrolling borders, lattice panels, domed lid with scalloped rim and foo dog finial; stamped Royal Sphinx, Maastricht, Made in Holland, Delfts

Dimensions: 18"H

Condition: Good vintage condition with light crazing to the glaze and the finial, and wear and staining to the unglazed foot rim consistent with age.
