On one side, the glaze ran during firing and left long amber streaks trailing down the unglazed body, a mark of the potter’s hand. Two reeded loop handles sit at the shoulder, and turned rings circle the body below a rolled rim. Pots like these held duck and goose confit preserved under a layer of fat. Only the top half and the interior were glazed, to keep the fat from soaking into the clay. It has a generous, rounded presence, lovely on a kitchen counter holding utensils, on a console with tall branches, or on the floor beside a hearth.

Origin: Southwest France

Age: 19th century

Material: Terracotta with yellow lead glaze

Details: Glazed upper body and interior, two reeded loop handles, rolled rim, turned rings, natural glaze drips down one side

Dimensions: 7.5"W × 13"H

Condition: Good antique condition with glaze losses along the rim and handles, scattered glaze flakes to the shoulder and along the glaze line, and small dark mineral inclusions in the clay.
